Festivals of Essouira
Essaouira is a festive little port town that has small festivals throughout the year. Local artists participate and help to organize these events. As in every Moroccan city and town, a large number of these festivals are religous. Essaouira is unique in the fact that its inhabitants come from a number of different religious backgrounds and the events throughout the year tend to be more varied than in other cities and regions in Morocco. The Gnaoua Music Festival in Essaouira draws both national and international performing artists and visitors. During one week the city is virtually transformed into a concert hall with artists performing throughout the medina. Musical styles include Gnaouan, jazz, traditional Moroccan and many other styles. Most of the large concerts are held in the Prince Moulay Hassan Square. Local artists set up stands and expose their art everywhere. For details on the festival visit www.festival-gnaoua.co.ma The Lila ceremony is a traditional African ceremony that is really quite spectacular. Activities include traditional dances, foods, storytellers and much more. As the dates change you should contact the Essaouira tourist information for specific information. |
